While Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning of summer, it also marks something else: the opportunity to thank our soldiers and honor those who we’ve lost. So this year, in addition to firing up the grill and relaxing with family, consider these five ways to honor fallen troops and evolve your Memorial Day tradition into Memorial Day Wellness.
Be Traditional– Take fresh flowers to a national cemetery, soldier’s lot, or monument site.
Be Contemplative– President Bill Clinton issued a memorandum in 2000 that encourages Americans to “pause for one minute at 3:00 pm (local) on Memorial Day to remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many to provide freedom for all.”
Be Generous– ClothingDonations.org will pick up your used clothes and household goods and use these donations to support programs for all Veterans.
Be Celebratory– Parades and celebrations are standard fare across the United States. This is a simple way to appreciate and honor service members.
Be Proud– It’s perfectly fine to fly the flag every day, but today it’s an especially good idea.
